Photographer Liam Alexander had no shortage of subjects for his first show, set to open September 8th at envoy enterprises in New York's Lower East Side. ‘Behind the Curtain’, curated by Severn Taylor, is a collection of images the up and coming lens man captured backstage at New York Fashion Week over 2 seasons. With free rein backstage at shows including Brian Reyes, Elise Overland, and rag & bone, the exhibition proves that what goes on behind the scenes is far more interesting than what we see on the runway.“I set out to create a body of work that uncovers the hidden and ephemeral beauty of the backstage that is often lost in the wake of the main event,” says Alexander. “I not only wanted to capture spontaneous moments but transport viewers to an entirely new world that will hopefully shape and define the their memories, and challenge their ideas of documentary photography.”The end result speaks to this notion, with innovative use of lighting and silhouettes that take the show beyond the realm of just simple paparazzi photography. It also certainly didn't hurt having a talent pool of ladies like Coco, Sasha, Freja, and Anja to name but a few. "Backstage I had a unique opportunity," he explains. "It's not every day that I get to shoot literally the best models in the world.  It's really a honor, and it's between the action when you realize why girls like Arlenis Sosa and Natasha Poly are so revered - they just exude such effortless beauty and personality.  All you really have to do is just push the shutter." Alexander will be backstage again this September, with a daily photo diary on stylecaster.com. It seems he may have found his niche. "Behind the Curtain" is on display September 8th - 2Oth @ envoy enterprises, 131 Chrystie street, NYC.- Christopher T.
