Positive/Negative: Sarah Kehoe
Sarah Kehoe describes her work as authentic, which has a lot to due with her inspiration: young children free to express any and every feeling with their own joyous gumption, the drive and movement of an athlete and moments with her family that certainly were vivid. Her style comes from watching closely. “I was always an observer, and it gave me a way to channel that into something creative.” That’s how this New York-based and more oftentimes LA bound photographer grew into the business. Although, this feeling and shooting style has gracefully evolved through time for Sarah.
Positive/Negative Moment Working with a consultant to help refine her work, Sarah was challenged to dig deep through a very emotional assignment where she had her break through moment. She was asked to discuss her family life so she could find the root of her inspiration and then put together a test shoot from her discoveries.
Turning her father's prep school memories during the time of the Vietnam War into her own work was the catalyst for her path. Looking at old photos, unearthing conversations and extracting details from him was the key to bringing the emotion she sought to capture alive.
She explains, the day of the shoot, it was zero degrees and models met for the first time, but quite magically, assumed the role as if they were living in the moment and serendipitously came alive. For Sarah, it was the first time she was able to capture something real that was manufactured and took photos that she felt were truly authentic and strong. “It taught me about the way I shoot and the way I strive to shoot” and now, Sarah channels that authenticity into an energetic spectrum of candid moments in all of her work.
