Collection Recap: Mathieu Mirano
We have to admit, we didn’t RSVP to this show. We didn’t know who he was and we were already overwhelmed with work. But someone tipped us off to check out this 20 year old and his debut collection. What a treasure. Mathieu Mirano started at Parsons but ditched school and just started creating on his own with a small team. He always knew what he wanted so simply went for it.
His collection gave us modern day Schiaparelli- zany inspiration (women riding dragons), bonkers beading (Think Elsie de Wolfe in Schiap’s Apollo sequined cape) and total glamour (The Duchess of Windsor). As Mirano walked us through the collection he pointed out some of his favorite pieces, “This was made in India but we sat together for a week in a half placing the beads and making the drawings here in New York. We ombred the beads from sequins, to seed beads to thread. We even did zippers with dragon heads and a studded fur that is luxurious but with a dash of edge.”
Fred Van Der Bundt went with the dragon slayer motif and explained the hair as, “ pretty slick since it cant be in their face on a dragon so it’s in a bun.” Naturally.
Mayia continued the theme and explained that, “The makeup shows alot of shine, it is almost changing color like a butterfly or an insect from green to gold. We wanted something mysterious!” Our favorite word of the week again!
Word on the street is that Vogue is already giving Mirano nods so keep a look out for this one. And please keep up with the mythological creature themes Mirano. We love it.
