Travel has a way of changing you forever. You get on a plane, train or automobile, visit a new place…and something magical happens, not just while you are there but also when you return home. After experiencing another pace of living, hearing a different kind of humor, walking through a new landscape, you return home and cannot look at things the same again. It’s like someone rubbed clean your glasses and you view your typical surroundings in a new light. ASSOULINE’s newest publication, Escape Hotel Stories is the perfect adventure for those you can’t hop on a plane to Easter Island, the Alaskan wilderness or to the tropical islands in the Maldives…at least not in the near future.
Authored by stylish travel expert, Francisca Mattéoli, the book is a charming look at over 20 stunning, exotic places and how they impacted famous artists, authors and filmmakers. Read about Camelback Mountain and how it became a driving force behind artist Max Ernest’s masterpiece, Capricorn. Or head to Japan and check into the Beniya Mukayu and be amazed by views to ancient villages, now protected as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The area evokes the spirit behind Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams, a film that pays homage to the harmony of nature.
After having perused through the book, cover to cover… I knew I wanted to know what inspired some as well-traveled and culturally astute as Francisca!
Has there been…
A place that you felt changed how you viewed the world?
Rwanda; I saw how the concept of life and death can be different for people and how it is impossible to have only one opinion about the subject. I went there to write a story for National Geographic and it was really one of the most important experiences of my life.
A place that challenged your personal values?
Rio. Because some years ago I decided to start a new life there, and had to explore new values, new ways of being and attitudes to find solutions and adapt myself to that new life.
A place that was closest to your heart?
There are two : Chile and Scotland. The first one, because I am Chilean, my father was Chilean, and I lived a big part of my life there. Scotland because my mother is Scottish and I really love that country and the Scottish people.
A place that you saw in danger of being destroyed?
Chile of course. My personal story is full of danger and places destroyed, but my experience has become positive after all. I use it in my work and it helps me to put a lot of things in perspective.
A place that…if you only had 1 trip to take this year…go here!
California, Carmel, Mission Ranch, at the bar!
