I have a penchant for anything nonchalantly sexy that combines a certain ease of dressing and body confidence with comfortable cool. Designer Amber Sakai, whose collection has been worn by actresses Anne Hathaway, Gillian Jacobs and singer songwriter Pixie Lott, completely fits this mould. Her pieces offer basics for layering in simple, chic silhouettes with the addition of sultry details – strategically positioned lace, black ruffles, asymmetric hemlines.
With a background in lingerie design, Sakai excellently translates lingerie themes into everyday wear, using this experience to her advantage. She tells me, “If you know how to make a woman’s body look amazing in lingerie then you can pretty much knock it out of the park making women look crazy great in everyday clothing”. For her spring collection, Amber finds inspiration in travel and ‘women in motion’. “There is a great sense of freedom in people’s dress whilst travelling” she explains. “They become more daring and inspired to dress the part, an idea or fantasy”. Vibrant colours and the simplicity and allure of a drape characterise Sakai’s spring summer line – continuing her signature theme of key, versatile staples with a twist.
The woman Amber has in mind for her collection is “the woman who is on the pulse, paired with flirtation - someone who is not afraid of living out their every desire.” I feel there is a youthful sophistication to Amber’s designs; her pieces can be worn from the bedroom to Sunday brunch and anywhere in between. I’m completely sold on her bodysuits (a seasonal staple for the brand) and her weekend collection: a monochrome mix of essential pieces: leggings, skirt, button down top, lace overcoat, bra, top and faux leather skirt. This is my go to capsule collection for effortless chic, a term completely synonymous with the Amber Sakai line.
