Remember when your mama yelled at you when she caught you trying to cut your own hair? Come on, we know you tried. Well Ibn Jasper actually did it and did it well. So well he has been cutting hair since he was 14. That expertise got him hooked up with Kanye West and the rest is history. His career has exploded from barbering to creative direction, collabs and a serious cool kid following.
Read on to hear where his name came from, his latest work and where he finds his zen.
Where does the name Ibn come from?
Ibn means "first born son" in Arabic. My father is Muslim... I'm his first son.
What inspired your alter ego name - Ferrari Murakami? When does that name get used?
I came up with that alias for Myspace because I didn't want people to know my real name. Then I used it for my first blog. Lupe Fiasco said my real name on his song "Paris, Tokyo" which messed up that plan, so I don't use that name or that blog anymore.
Tell us how you describe yourself on a resume. Stylist? Baller? Barber? All of the above?
Image Consultant.
You started cutting your own hair when you were 14 and continue to cut Kanye’s locks. What’s the next look we will be seeing on the streets?
Newest look I've been involved in is Cudi's perm/fade. We debuted that look in the "Cruel Summer" film the premiered at The Cannes Film Festival.
Do you have a barber clientele or are you exclusively with Kanye?
I'm in-house for G.O.O.D. / DONDA. The only thing that I do outside of that is product design and development with brands that I respect.
Some people go to yoga or the gym to release their stress and find clarity. You go to the skate park. Tell us about that.
Skateboarding is all physics, balance and fearlessness. Entertainment and fashion is illusion and perception, but talent is what transcends. I use skateboarding to balance my life out because with all of the things that go on in entertainment and fashion, if you aren't focused when you're skating you will really hurt yourself. All that extra stuff doesn't help me land tricks, focusing on landing tricks helps me land tricks. And to me everything in life is a new "trick" to learn. You have the idea in your head, then you have to teach yourself how to execute it physically.
How reliant are you on Social Media?
I don't rely on social media, I live in the real world. I don't follow anyone on Social Media. Social media is just a promotional tool that I use.
What is next for you?
I'm releasing the shoe I designed for Diamond Supply Co. Footwear, the "Diamond Jasper" - My skate shoe.
Where will we find you this summer?
I just got back from the “Watch the Throne” European tour so I'm just trying to chill this summer.
