The models on the runway at the Isabel Marant Spring 2011 show looked like the kind of people you would see playing tennis ironically at the country club; edgy and cool, they give off the impression that the game is more of a setup up for the outfits rather than the other way around.

Marant, who is known for her edgy, eclectic designs, presented a spring collection that had been carefully chosen to create a look of indifference, as if to imply that the models had thrown on whatever they could find without bothering to look.  Mesh was layered with floral printed skirts and tops, over lace tanks, and under belted jackets and rugby dresses; trousers with lace-up flies and silk varsity jackets complemented the athletic motif with familiar homecoming references. Perhaps a subtler allusion to the collection’s preppy undertones was the choice of colors, such as the heavy use of white and the occasional pops of pastel pink in trousers, cutoff shorts, or a rugby dress.

However, Marant has never been one to gravitate towards just one style. Her signature slouchy ankle boots were paired with every ensemble and pink floral prints were scattered through the presentation, interrupting the flow of preppy looks. Colorful sequined vests, striking red printed pants, and lots of lace to add her usual touch of glam to traditionally boyish looks – in one particular outfit, Marant layers royal blue lace under a plaid shirt, making for one sexy lumberjack.

Isabel Marant has staked her reputation in what can most accurately be called indie fashion, experimenting with utilitarian glamour and the belief that “everything goes with everything.” While some may find the inherent contradictions of her designs unpalatable, loyal Marant fans and adventurous shoppers will undoubtedly adore her Spring 2011 collection.

Sometimes there was just a little to much mesh for me.
