The D&G Spring 2011 collection may not have veered too far from the textbook floral spring theme in Milan this week, but the pieces themselves are too light and playful to hold it against the designers. Truly, this collection demonstrates that collections do not need to be totally bold or new to be fresh, and Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana once again managed to delight.

Even the runway was lined with flowers and the backdrop was a forest straight out of a Disney movie. In fact, Snow White herself made an appearance as a print on several tees and tanks, and red and white checked dresses were a nod to romantic summer picnics. Bubble shorts, flowing cabbage rose-printed maxi dresses, and pinafore dresses were some of the highlights of the collection, and gingham head scarves, espadrille wedges adorned with a flower at the ankle, and oversized totes sweetly finished the look.

Ideal for the young and young-at-heart, the D&G Spring 2011 collection may be a little saccharine for some. However, Dolce and Gabbana managed to produce the consummate spring collection with an exquisite playfulness that was lacking in many of the edgier collections. Through the designers’ use of color and floral prints, the models seemed to truly personify the spring sensibility.

Love this collection! Those bubble shorts are awesome.

I think they took the whole theme a bit too literally. The picnic table/blanket fabric looks awful. Are they trying to appeal to a younger crowd? because I don't know anyone from my generation who wouldn't rather go to a thrift store for these kinds of pieces.

D&G have always had a playful side (like the multi color polka dot fabric in fall 2010). And the flower print actually looks good and on trend. True the picnic tablecloth is rather too much, but it can easily be ignored considering how great the rest of the pieces are.

I love the long maxi dresses/skirts, they look amazing. Great way to not get sunburned, not that I have that problem.... I LOVE the diaper shorts, as I am going to call them, soooo cute! LOVE it!
