LaQuan Smith is fashion’s scrappy underdog. Despite being only 22-years-old, surviving cancer and having been rejected from FIT (twice!), the up-and-coming womenswear designer has already dressed some of the biggest celebrity names, including Rhianna, Lady Gaga, Alicia Keys and Tyra Banks. A Queens native, Smith featured his second runway collection at Spring 2011 New York Fashion Week and early supporters such as Andre Leon Talley were not disappointed by the glitzy Marie Antoinette-inspired creations. Although most of his designs are not yet available for purchase, Smith is said to be currently working on creating an online store for his site.
Pairing a natural talent for design with an incredible work ethic, LaQuan Smith is certainly a standout among fashion’s newest generation of designers.
