Designer to Watch: David Koma

Some up-and-coming designers struggle for years before finding recognition in the industry. And then there’s David Koma. The Georgian-born, London-based womenswear designer has only recently graduated from Central St. Mark’s with an MA in fashion in 2009, but Koma has already generated quite a buzz in the fashion world with his eponymous label, which presented its fourth season at Spring 2011 London Fashion Week.

Koma favors bold silhouettes and strong sexuality in his creations, and he notes that his signature touches include “sculptural shapes, heavy embellishment and a perfect fit.”  It’s no wonder, then that his dresses have been popular among some of the most stylish celebrities, including Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Rhianna and Sienna Miller – just to name a few. But while Koma has already gained a strong following and is well on his way to becoming a household name, he is still finding his way and refining his technique as any emerging designer must do.  

Ultimately, though, Koma has a rare and admirable ability to evoke as a sense of empowerment through strong silhouettes and striking details, and we can expect great things from the young designer as his artistic vision continues to evolve.
