When London based designer Ara Jo graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2009, her avant-garde womenswear graduate collection “Hypnosis” was met with critical praise from the press. Inspired by mysterious objects and fairy tales, her designs experiment with textures and silhouettes for an effect that is at once surreal and sexy. One industry insider who took notice of Jo’s extraordinary creative vision was celebrity stylist Nicola Formichetti, and the designer’s reputation soon skyrocketed when Lady Gaga was seen wearing a design from the collection. Since then, pieces from the label have been featured in publications such as Dazed and Confused and Nylon. The designs are fantastic and inspiring, if not always wearable, and it will be fascinating to see how Ara Jo will evolve in response to growing public recognition.
