Monday evening, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and Vogue announced Billy Reid as the recipient of the 2010 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund (CVFF) Award.
The Alabama-based men’s and womenswear designer was selected from a shortlist of 10 young designers, which included names like Prabal Gurung and Joseph Altuzarra, to receive $300,000 in cash as well as a business mentorship and a bronze swan trophy designed by sculptor Rachel Feinstein. Runners-up were jewelry designer Eddie Borgo and womenswear designer Prabal Gurung, who each received $100,000 and a bronze egg also by Feinstein in recognition of their work.
This year marks the first time in the seven years since the launch of CVFF that the cash prize has been increased, from $200,000 for the winner and $50,000 for the runners-up to $300,000 and $100,000, respectively. The money and mentorship program are intended to encourage the growth of the emerging designers and facilitate the business aspects of design. Previous winners include such acclaimed designers as Sophie Theallet, Alexander Wang and Proenza Schouler.
